# Your first dictation

> Hold to talk, or tap for hands-free. Either way the text lands at your cursor.

Put your cursor in any text field, then dictate either way:

    Hold <kbd>⌥</kbd> <kbd>Space</kbd>, speak, and release when you are done. The finished text appears at your cursor right after you let go.

    Holding shines for short bursts: a chat reply, a commit message, a search query. The key is down exactly as long as you are talking, so nothing runs longer than you intend.

  <Tab title="Tap: hands-free">
    Tap <kbd>⌥</kbd> <kbd>Space</kbd> once and start talking with your hands free. Stop it with another tap, or just pause: Rekody finishes on its own after a short silence.

    Tapping shines for longer thoughts: drafting an email, thinking out loud into a doc, dictating notes while you read something else.

## While you talk

1. Rekody shows that it is listening, with your words appearing live as you speak.
2. You can keep working while you talk. Rekody follows along.
3. When you stop, the finished text lands where your cursor is.

  That small floating capsule is [the pill](/app/the-pill). It is your visible signal that Rekody is listening, and it vanishes the moment you stop.

  Rekody stays off in password and other secure fields by design. Switch to a normal text field and it comes back. See [Privacy](/app/privacy).
